USB Firewall--It Runs Linux!

I got an email the other day from somebody on a Linux User Group mailing list saying that I should have a look at the Yoggie.  Looking through the material, it's a pretty neat idea for the habitual road warrior.

What's the interesting thing to me is that this does solve a particular problem space and it does it very handily.  That space is when you take your laptop into a potentially hostile environment.  Instead of dragging along your SoHo router/firewall which doesn't work anyway when you try to make it associate with the access point in the new environment (you can do this with unnatural acts, but for the time being we'll call it out of scope), you use the Yoggie and drop it into a free USB slot.

What you get when you use the Yoggie is a personal firewall with a shunt to take traffic from your LAN side and clean it up, your operating system stays on the "inside" of a NAT firewall.  Then they add corporate management, AV, content filtering--just about everything you would want to protect the endpoints from.

I like the freshness of the Yoggie because it takes all this processing junk that we put on desktops and laptops nowadays (anti-spyware, anti-virus, software firewall, popup blocker, the list goes on and on) and it pushes most of that off the main processor.  The size means that it's easy for me to slip into my laptop bag with all the bajillion other USB drives that I keep in there.

Here's a review from a couple of weeks ago and another from June if you want a couple more opinions. =)
