I’ll begin my blog here on CSO with this quick introduction and then I’ll dive in. My background has encompassed more than 25 years in information systems and security.
Wait, are you reading the right blog, here?
I mean, this is "Walking the Ramparts", right? A blog name that conjures images of physical fortifications, parapets and men in pointy helmets hurtling cows* at the attacking horde? So, information systems?
Well, yes. We often wear many hats, both pointy and not.
Long ago I inherited physical security responsibilities in addition to the technological ones. You see, in my professional life I’ve often been lucky to be the odd one out in a room. Originally, I was an IT guy in with the Finance people or Customer Service, C-levels or in-the-trenches field folks. Later, I was an IT security guy pointing out my job was more difficult if the ramparts had open gates and only goldfish in the moats.
I was lucky because my oblique perspective in these situations presented opportunities to drive projects in different directions and for me to learn from others’ experience as well. The result of these opportunities often ended with "Hmm, Yes, I see. Why don't you take care of that?"
I’d like to explore some of the fringes of security and preparedness, as well as see how diverse (and even conflicting) teams can breed unlikely resources for strengthening our security posture and determining what is most valuable to whom.
Ramparts are a nice start. Come and take a walk with me to see where they lead.
And don’t forget your hat.
